Australia's mouse plague is a devastating phenomenon that has left communities across Western Australia's grain belt in a state of desperation. The sheer magnitude of the mouse invasion has shocked even seasoned farmers, with estimates of 800 mice per hectare reaching as high as 400 times that rate. The signs of the plague are everywhere, from the walls and ceilings to the food stores and even the beds. The air is thick with the smell of urine, faeces, and decaying bodies, a testament to the sheer number of rodents. The region has been overrun with record-high mice numbers since March, and the situation is not confined to Western Australia alone. South Australia's Adelaide Plains and Yorke Peninsula are also experiencing skyrocketing mice populations, putting authorities on alert. The perfect conditions for a rodent explosion, as described by CSIRO mouse ecologist Steven Henry, include heavy grain crops, summer hailstorms that knock seed to the ground, and a hot, dry autumn. This combination has created an abundant food source for mice, leading to a population boom. Farmers have been warning officials of increasing rodent numbers since December, but the seeds of the plague were sown long before. The higher-strength zinc phosphide bait, known as ZP50, is a Schedule 7 poison that releases toxic phosphine gas when it reacts with stomach acid or moisture. Federal regulators approve its use only in emergencies, as it can kill wildlife alongside mice. Permit decisions are a numbers game, according to Adelaide University toxicologist Ian Musgrave. The crucial consideration is mouse numbers. If there are not enough mice to consume the bait, the risk to birds and other non-target species increases. In Western Australia, plague numbers had already been reached, and farmers say bureaucratic delays meant the poison arrived too late to prevent substantial crop damage. The damage to crops is such that many farmers in the region may struggle to break even this year. The psychological burden of the plague is immense, with residents showing remarkable resilience in the face of adversity. The mice arrived almost overnight, and the question now is whether they will leave the same way. Experts say there is a moment in every mouse plague where the tide ebbs, the scratching in the walls stops, and the mice vanish. Whether Western Australia is nearing the end of its mouse crisis or merely the halfway point remains unknown. Once mouse populations reach extraordinary levels, the social order that normally governs their behaviour dramatically breaks down. Competition for food intensifies, disease spreads rapidly, cannibalism increases, and breeding rates fall. The mouse plague in Western Australia and South Australia's grain belts is a stark reminder of the devastating impact of rodent invasions on agriculture and communities. The situation is a complex interplay of environmental conditions, bureaucratic processes, and the resilience of those affected by the plague.
